The nun monastic complex of Văratec is dedicated to the “Assumption of the Virgin.” The present-day construction in stone and brick that is surrounded by walls and has the aspect of a fortress replaced the original wooden construction in 1785. The monastery museum houses numerous art objects, especially highly valuable carpets and tapestries that date back to the 19th century. Some of these were donated by Princess Safta Brâncoveanu, daughter of Prince Teodor Balş (1856-1857). Her bust was sculpted by Ion Jalea (1887-1984) and can be admired in the museum.
